7 September 2011 -- Primary health care is the most efficient way to address the double burden of infectious and chronic noncommunicable diseases, and the growing numbers of the elderly. In her address to the Sixty-fourth Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia, Dr Margaret Chan, WHO's Director-General, underscored that in a time of financial austerity, public health must show a thirst for efficiency and an intolerance of waste.
